The highest landmark in Valencia’s skyline, the Ikon apartment building
Visionary architect Ricardo Bofill was known for his dynamic approach to redefining space and style, centered around the centrality of human scale. Following his death in January 2022, at the age of 82, the world of architecture mourned the loss of one of its contemporary greats. But Bofill’s work lives on, both in the buildings he created and in the drawings he left behind, such as those for Ikon in Valencia.
In 1986, Ricardo Bofill designed the Turia Garden, a large linear park that connected the urban fabric and revolutionized its urban planning. As a result of this transformation, Valencia stood out for its innovation and creativity, so much so that it was selected as the World Design Capital of 2022. Now Ikon by Kronos Homes, Bofill’s newest high-rise, is closing the circle of modernization in the city and creating a new landmark in its skyline.
Ikon is Ricardo Bofill’s personal vision, interpreting the cosmopolitan essence of the Mediterranean and translating it into architecture. One- to four-bedroom apartments and ultra-luxurious penthouses provide unparalleled views of Valencia. Large windows let the sunshine into each apartment, as do terraces with glass balustrades, providing unobstructed views of the city skyline. The spectacular panorama stretches from the sea to the mountains. In addition, the 110-square-meter building features a magnificent swimming pool with a solarium, gym and social area for connoisseurs. The pool’s design gives the impression that the Ikon rises out of the water, like a lighthouse on the skyline of the modern metropolis of Valencia.
When it comes to architecture, Bofill’s love of light and shadow has long been a key feature of his work. This is certainly the case with Ikon, whose facade was inspired by the golden light flooding the city. Pure dynamism in the mix of curves and edges, which culminates at higher levels where the structure emerges from the whole, becoming a perfect element of distinction. A sculpture that stands out against the city skyline and delights in the blue sky as part of the building.
“I am happy to have had the opportunity to work with Ricardo Bophil and bring one of his latest projects to life. Ikon is not only the tallest tower in Valencia, but also one of the most iconic. Ikon is a symbol of the city’s modernity, but above all, it is a legacy of a legendary architect,” says Saïd Hejal, Partner and CEO of Kronos Real Estate Group.
Bofill’s work includes some of the most impressive postmodern projects in Europe, America and North Africa, such as Kafka Castle and Walden 7 in Catalonia, La Muralla Roja in Alicante and Axe Majeur in Paris, as well as 77 West Wacker Drive in Chicago and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco.
Located next to the Palacio de Congresos in Valencia, the two Ikon towers are 30 and 14 stories high, respectively, and house 142 and 61 apartments, respectively.
