Milena House: A Nature-Infused Estonian Escape Wins Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Ako In

Ako In is a family-owned design firm based in Tartu, Estonia. Their creation, Milena House, recently garnered a coveted Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Best Luxury Residential Interior Design in Estonia, 2024 – showcasing their exceptional ability to bring to life spaces that redefine comfort and sophistication.

Founded by the husband-and-wife team of Mait Lauri (CEO) and Alesja Kovalenko-Lauri, Ako In has carved a niche for itself in designing captivating interiors for both residential and public spaces. Their passion lies in creating havens that not only cater to a luxurious aesthetic but also foster a deep connection with the surrounding environment.

Ako In is a seasoned company specializing in interior and building design since 2005. Their expertise spans from conceptualizing architectural projects to final execution, encompassing a deep understanding of the intricate workings of architecture and technical systems. While primarily focused on interior design, they occasionally undertake entire projects from architectural design to interior decoration, yielding award-winning results. Noteworthy clients include Telia, Philip Morris International, and Euronics, with a portfolio ranging from luxury interiors to retail spaces and public venues like hotels and restaurants.

Led by principal designer Alesja Kovalenko-Lauri, known for her creativity and keen sense of color, Ako In emphasizes collaborative teamwork. Supported by a dedicated technician, the three-member team ensures meticulous attention to detail in every project. The company’s name, Ako In, is a nod to Alesja’s artistic roots, derived from her signature “Ako” on artworks from her school days, culminating in Alesja Kovalenko Interiors.

The Milena House project perfectly exemplifies this philosophy. Situated amidst the verdant embrace of Tänassilma village in Estonia, the client’s brief was refreshingly straightforward: a desire for both luxury and a profound connection with nature. The Ako In team embarked on a collaborative journey with the client, carefully deciphering their vision to translate it into a tangible living space.

From Inside Out: A Design Process Rooted in Nature

The famous American architect Frank Gehry said: “A lot of people don’t get it, but I design from the inside out so that the finished product looks inevitable somehow. I think it’s important to create spaces that people like to be in, that are humanistic”. Mait Lauri likes Gehry`s idea, because the whole point of designing a house is to make it for the humans inside. With Milena house, they had a unique chance to make the house from inside-out.

One thing that has always been the company’s goal, is to not create same thing in all projects. When client hire them, they must know that their interior will be unique, not copy-paste from earlier projects. So, each project is unique, because each client is unique. For example – the fireplace in Milena, it was a masterpiece. Did Da Vinci paint Mona Lisa several times? No, and neither does Ako In. For the next project, they’ll design something different; something that is inspired by a particular place, room, or client. They generate new ideas in each project, and this expands their skills to face new challenges.

A Merging of Luxury and Nature

Stepping into Milena House is akin to entering a haven of refined elegance. Expansive windows serve as portals to the surrounding forest, blurring the line between the indoors and the outdoors. Deer grazing peacefully outside becomes part of the everyday experience, and foxes and lynxes also appear every now and then, fostering a sense of tranquility and immersion in nature.

The pièce de résistance of the home undoubtedly is the captivating two-sided fireplace. Strategically positioned to divide the dining and living areas, it features a luxurious combination of Black Fusion granite and rich wood panels. This visually stunning centerpiece exudes warmth and sophistication, becoming a natural focal point for gatherings and relaxation.

Ako In’s focus on sustainability shines through in their timeless design philosophy. They believe that a well-crafted interior, built on high-quality materials and infused with a touch of designer ingenuity, transcends fleeting trends. This approach ensures that Milena House remains a sanctuary of comfort and luxury for years to come.

A Legacy of Award-Winning Design

The Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2024 is just the latest feather in Ako In’s well-deserved cap. Their dedication to exceptional design has garnered them recognition in Estonia and beyond. Their portfolio boasts accolades like Best Wood Building of the Year 2009, Best Museum Interior Design, and Best Building of the Year awards for residential and commercial projects. Their reach extends beyond Estonian borders, with completed projects in Finland and Latvia, showcasing their versatility and ability to translate their design philosophy across cultures.

A Family Business with a Global Vision

Ako In’s story perfectly showcases the power of family, passion, and steadfast focus on quality. With a keen eye for detail, a dedication to sustainability, and a global vision, Ako In is poised to continue transforming dreams into award-winning realities for discerning clients worldwide.
